The Houston Astros made a huge mistake trading
Brad Lidge and he proved it, leading Philadelphia to
the World Series title.
The closer whose mettle was questioned by Astros
management, Lidge was perfect this season. He
went 48 for 48 in save opportunities, including a
postseason record seven saves in the playoffs.
His trade just makes it obvious Houston needs to
fire general manager Ed Wade before its too late.

Where are Saytown's hottest nightspots?
What are the best spots in Saytown to
go to on each night of the week?
Saytownsports is a simple man. We
enjoy sitting at the bar, watching sports
on TV and having a Bud Light, but we
know there's more to life then being a
dork. So where to go for some true fun?
Visit our blog and help us put together a
top five for each night of the week to give
your fellow Saytown residents a guide on
where and when to go. It doesn't have to
be fancy nightclub, it can be just a place
to sit down and have a beer.
Let us know why the club is a great
place to go on certain nights - drink
specials, DJ, bartenders, crowd?
Give us your opinion and we'll post your
comments in a future article.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Looking to play softball,
baseball, basketball or soccer
but can't find a team?
No, it's not your breath, really.
It can be difficult finding a
team to play for, especially if
you are new to the area or are
just starting to play in adult
leagues.
Saytownsports wants to help
by posting your information on
a new page we will debut soon.
Send us an e-mail and we'll
try to connect you with the
right people. When e-mailing,
please include the following:
1, Sport desired; 2, name;
3, age; 4, experience; 5,
level of play; 6, playing
positions in order of
preference; 7, nights
available in order of
preference; 8, area or
facility you want to play at;
9, notice needed to attend
a game; 10, contact info.
For example: Guey Rod,
25; softball, men's class D;
have played for 2 years;
3B/SS; Tuesdays/
Thursdays and weekend
tournaments; 8, Alva Jo or
Time Warner; 9, Be there in
five minutes if you call.
If you want to include a picture
of yourself, please do so.
A photo could help prospective
coaches and teammates
recognize you from time spent
with other teams and it will
also make it easier for them to
locate you when you arrive for
a first game. If you're an
attractive dude or chick, a
photo could also make it
easier to find a team.
Saytownsports got great
response when we included
our childhood photo - to the
right - with our ad. For some
reason, everyone was really
nice to us, "Hey you guys!"
There are only a few million of us lucky enough
to truly call San Antonio home. Are you truly
one of us? Not sure?

Express-News offering buyouts in another downsizing
The San Antonio Express-News is seeking
to reduce its current workforce by 50 in a
continuing effort to downsize.
San Antonio's only daily newspaper, the
Express-News is seeking 50 employees to
leave voluntarily by accepting buyouts. The
Hearst-owned newspaper is also closing its
Human Resources building on North
Alamo and moving those employees to
its main facility on Avenue E and Third
Street to cut costs.
Publisher Tom Stephenson announced
the moves in an e-mail to employees
Thursday afternoon.
The proposed layoffs come a year after
the company accepted 70-plus buyouts
in a prior reorganization.
In addition to layoffs, the Express-News
has opted not to fill numerous vacancies
created by retirements, departures and
dismissals and cut back on travel.

Martinez bombards foe to capture NABF title
San Antonio's Raul Martinez blasted
Victor Proa in the first round, winning the
NABF super flyweight title with a first-
round KO in Philadelphia.
Martinez (24-0, 14 KOs) stunned Proa
with an overhand right just seconds into
Friday's bout and then dominated the
Monterrey, Mexico, fighter before the
referee halted the bout 1 minute, 8
seconds into the bout.
Proa (26-1-2) had never been knocked
out before, making Martinez's effort all
the more impressive.
"I wanted to make a statement and I
did,” Martinez told the Express-News.
“This was my coming-out party.”
The Harlandale graduate should get an
opportunity to fight for a world title as he
remained unbeaten.

San Antonio escaped with a victory for
a third-straight time, holding off the
Los Angeles Clippers 86-83 at the
Staples Center.
With Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili
out with ankle injuries, Tim Duncan
continued to carry the Spurs. He had
20 points and 15 rebounds Tuesday
night as San Antonio won its third
straight. He is averaging 20.7 points
and 10 rebounds during the streak.
"Obviously we're short-handed, but
we've found a way to win games,''
Duncan said. "It's on my shoulders a
little bit more. There's going to be a
learning curve with everybody.''
Roger Mason continued to shine,
scoring 21 points against the Clippers,
including what proved to be a game-
winning 3-pointer with eight seconds
left in the game.
"He was the guy, we wanted the ball
in his hands to make the decision,''
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
"He had the green light.''
Mason made 3 of 5 3-point attempts
and 9 of 16 shots overall.
"He's been great for us, he's gotten
great results," Duncan said of Mason.
"When (Parker and Ginobili) come
back, he's going to have an even
bigger role. People will be paying
more attention to them.''
Baron Davis missed a 3-point shot in
the closing seconds that would have
tied the game.
Michael Finley also continued his rise
from the NBA graveyard, scoring 19
points. Finley made 3 of 5 3-point
attempts.
George Hill continued to basically
dribble the ball up the court, still too
inexperienced to set up the offense.
